Overview
West Japan Railway Company is a major land transport company founded in 1987, centered in western Japan, that develops multifaceted transportation and real estate businesses with the Sanyo Shinkansen and Kinki region conventional lines as its main pillars.
Current Situation
West Japan Railway Company achieved consolidated sales of approximately ¥1.635 trillion and operating profit of approximately ¥179.7 billion in the fiscal year ending March 2024, establishing a strong position in urban transportation centered on the Keihanshin area. The core railway business accounts for the majority of transportation revenue, centered on the Shinkansen and urban network, while increasing the proportion of non-railway sectors such as distribution and real estate. It has established a Safety Research Institute and Shinkansen Management Headquarters, working on railway safety and service improvements, while also advancing rationalization of local lines and conversion to bus services. Since 2015, it has promoted vehicle modernization by introducing new models such as the 227 series and 273 series, and is implementing initiatives to expand exchange populations in collaboration with regions. Although affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is focusing on digital services and autonomous driving technology, and continuing future investments such as the Naniwa Susumu Line scheduled to open in 2031. The president is Kazuaki Hasegawa, and major shareholders include trust banks, major banks, and the Norwegian government.
